It Is Written: A Study of the Doctrine of Scripture

with Brad Klassen

The first temptation to confront mankind was a temptation to distrust the integrity of God’s Word. In the paradise of Eden, the serpent’s first step was to question whether God had spoken clearly: “Indeed, has God said?” (Genesis 3:1). His next step was to assert that God had not spoken truthfully: “You surely will not die!” (Genesis 3:4).

The historical account of Satan’s temptation of Adam and Eve in Genesis 3 is crucial for understanding the tempter’s modus operandi. God’s word is the object of his hatred—the primary target of his attack. Ever since achieving a victory in the Garden, he has continued his assault, repeating the same message to mankind over and over: “God’s Word isn’t clear.” “God’s Word isn’t sufficient.” “God’s Word isn’t binding.” “God’s Word isn’t true.”

This message resonates in the unbelieving world. But with Christians, Satan’s modus operandi is implemented in a more nuanced manner. Rather than tempting the believer to reject God’s Word outright, Satan invites him to question it subtly. He sows tiny seeds of doubt, often in the guise of “intellectual responsibility.” He doesn’t call upon the believer to burn his Bible, but at least to lay it aside for a time, or to balance it out with other authorities. The tempter will even applaud the Christian for his growing intellectual awareness of the Bible if he can at the same time convince him that he doesn’t need to obey what it says.

In response to this relentless attack, the words of Jesus Christ provide the believer with the one and only response: “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:4, citing Deuteronomy 8:3). The true believer must resist all of Satan’s clever overtures and embrace God’s Word as the essential nutrient for his soul.

To help nurture this conviction, Men of the Word will focus on the doctrine of Scripture in the upcoming ministry year. In the fall of 2024, our study will focus on the qualities which define God’s Word. In the spring of 2025, our study will focus on the practical process of studying God’s Word.

Men of all ages are invited; no registration is necessary to attend.

The ‘I Am’s’ of Christ

with Chris Hamilton

To supplement our focus in Men of the Word on the doctrine of Scripture in 2024–2025, Chris Hamilton will be teaching a mini-series throughout the year on the “I Am” statements of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Gospel of John. This mini-series promises to ignite our adoration for the ultimate Word of God, the person of Jesus Christ.
