Intensive - Preaching and Poetry

5 dates
  • Time: 1 pm–5 pm

Poetry has been a hallmark of biblical history, expressing truth in verse. This class will explore poetic meter, its use in scripture, preaching, and sacred music. We’ll trace history, from early church fathers to modern poets like Martin Luther, Miles Coverdale, Richard Baxter, John Bunyan, Isaac Watts, and many others. We’ll learn how these poets provided lyrics for the flock to sing, fulfilling Paul’s command to sing to one another. Guest lecturers will share their experiences using poetry to express gospel truth and its impact on their preaching. By the end, we hope to foster appreciation for theological poetry and its benefits in personal devotion.
