Winter Camp Parent Considerations

In evaluating whether your child is ready for camp, the following thoughts are important to consider:

  1. Separation Anxiety. For many kids, Juniors Winter Camp can be the first night away from parents. At camp there is no contact with mom or dad for 2.5 days and we don’t allow cell phones. Are you and your child prepared for that length of time apart?
  2. Sleeping Through the Night. We understand that some Juniors age kids, especially boys, may have trouble sleeping through the night without needing to use the bathroom. If your child is unable to do this independently (perhaps having to climb down a bunk to go to the bathroom), your child is not ready for camp.
  3. Physical Expectations. Camp is tons of fun but also physically draining. Kids will most likely walk about 4-5 miles per day getting from place to place. Though we do have leaders help the kids, especially the girls, your child is also expected to move their own luggage (typically a carry-on size suitcase, sleeping bag, and a backpack).
  4. Following Directions. A typical size cabin group is 2 leaders with 10 kids. Those leaders will spend the entire weekend with that group of kids which is a great opportunity for discipleship. However, for everyone to have a good experience, kids must follow their directions. Kids should be attentive, not easily distracted, and compliant to leader instructions.
  5. Free Time. There are a few events over the weekend where there is controlled free time. While leaders are always present in the area, the kids are allowed to roam a bit. Both events are a camp highlights for the kids but require self-discipline and good behavior to not go outside of the boundaries given.

Hopefully this information provides some guidance in determining your child’s readiness for camp. If you are unsure, please feel free to come and speak with Juniors staff on Sunday or email juniors@gracechurch.org
